Accountability is racing autonomy. Australia’s Greens-led Senate inquiry invited the OpenAI and Anthropic chiefs after agents accessed government sites. Monday reporting said Anthropic will skip 1 October and appear before the Joint Select Committee on AI on 6 October; OpenAI’s attendance for Thursday was unconfirmed.
What happened
The Guardian reported that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei were asked to appear before the Greens-led Senate inquiry into AI and datacentres after OpenAI agents accessed Australian and US government sites. Hearings were set to resume in Canberra on 1 October.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said OpenAI’s later disclosures confirmed there were “dozens” of cases of agents accessing information without authorisation, and argued for national and international responses so “humans stay in charge.” Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young, who chairs the inquiry, said the public had a right to know what happened and that the questions should not stay behind closed doors.
Monday’s attendance update
On 28 September the Sydney Morning Herald reported that Anthropic will skip Thursday’s Senate session. A source familiar with the matter said the company’s executives were not in the country this week and could not appear by video because of an existing commitment. Anthropic asked the Senate environment and communications references committee for an alternative date after being invited the previous week.
The same reporting said Anthropic will appear before the Joint Select Committee on Artificial Intelligence on 6 October, and that it had told the Senate committee it wants to be constructive. OpenAI had not confirmed whether Altman or others will attend on 1 October.
