AI is turning up on the customer's side of the counter. A one-trillion-parameter multimodal model from France; open weights promised in about three weeks after safety testing; benchmarks pending.

What Mistral shipped

On Tuesday 6 October, French AI lab Mistral released Mistral Large 4, a one-trillion-parameter multimodal model. It is not yet open-weight: for now it is available through a public endpoint, and Mistral says it will release the weights in about three weeks once safety testing is complete.

Mistral says it trained the model on 4,000 Nvidia GPUs, "two to three times less than our Chinese competitors." Benchmark results are still pending, so performance claims are not yet independently checked.

Coverage context

A European option now sits alongside US closed models and Chinese open models, with weights promised after safety testing and benchmarks still pending.
