AI is moving into the tools people already use. MXC generally available on Windows 11 to set which files and networks agents can access; Copilot local context and actions on Copilot+ PCs in coming months.
What Microsoft made generally available
At its Windows and Surface event on Wednesday 7 October, Microsoft announced that Microsoft Execution Containers (MXC) are generally available on Windows 11, letting organisations "define which files and networks agents can access, with those policies enforced at runtime." Microsoft says agents including OpenAI's Codex and GitHub Copilot already support it, with others including Anthropic's Claude Code and Perplexity to follow.
It also said Copilot on Copilot+ PCs will, with the user's permission, be able to use local files and recent activity, take actions on the device and use local AI models, rolling out "in the coming months." New laptops built around Nvidia's RTX Spark chip went on pre-order, shipping from 16 October.
What is live, and what is not
Agent security is moving into the operating system. Most features named for Copilot are not yet live, and Microsoft notes governance at scale may need extra services.
Coverage context
Windows 11 now has a generally available way to limit which files and networks an agent can reach. Copilot local context and actions on Copilot+ PCs remain a coming-months promise, not a live default.
