What was reported

The Guardian reported on 22 October that the Sovereign AI Leadership taskforce, including Nvidia, Microsoft and Cisco, has told the government it has roughly 12 months to build a "compact" that shows communities how they benefit from hosting datacentres, including letting councils keep more business rates, before US-style opposition takes hold.

Campaigners including PauseAI UK, Action to Protect Rural Scotland and Foxglove criticised the plan. The government said datacentres should create British jobs and invest in local communities.

Coverage context
